December First Friday: Material Nation Gallery Talk w/ Jamie Swartz

Friday, December 4, 2026
Join us for a special gallery talk with IQM Collections Manager Jamie Swartz as we explore "American Identities: Quilts from 1970 to Today" — a selection of quilts and textiles curated by Jamie Swartz as part of "Material Nation: 250 Years of American Quilts."

Since the mid-twentieth century, American quiltmaking has emerged as a powerful vehicle for expressing identity and engaging with social transformation. These textiles document pivotal historical moments while preserving cultural traditions shaped by migration and resettlement. At the same time, the medium has expanded into fashion and fine art, with the art quilt movement exploring abstraction and new materials. Explore how quilts remain vital for articulating personal narrative while addressing collective histories of race, environment, and cultural resilience.

First Fridays are always free! Enjoy free gallery access from 4-7 p.m. Presentations begin at 5:30 p.m.
